Lettering Sketchbook

I found this Lettering Sketchbook created be Linzie Hunter and I've grown quite fond of it. I think it's very good for designers to practice making letter forms in new, fun experimental ways.

The Burger King Studio

Burger King has developed a new gimmick consisting of part art part (free) think tank part design studio. The burger giants are taking "Have it Your Way" to a whole new level by offering the chance to let the public design BK tees and other merchandise. They call it the BK Studio, I think it's an interesting idea. We'll see how this all plays out.

London + Daft Punk = Awesome

London (harder, better, faster, stronger) from David Hubert on Vimeo.

I'd love to give credit but don't see the original source...

Motel Postcards

Nostalgic retro goodness.

Because we all need a pick me up

booooooom.com has posted an new project that seems pretty awesome. Quoted from their site: So here’s the deal: There is just so much negativity all around us these days, have you noticed? It’s infesting the internet, it’s taking over the big screen, it’s cutting you off, it’s showing up on your bank statement, it’s staining your new shirt, it’s breathing down your neck, it’s not giving you a vacation, it’s talking behind your back, it’s stuffing you in a locker, it’s cheating on you, it’s charging you more, it’s giving you less, and it’s making you miserable!

It’s making me miserable! I don’t think I know of a single person who couldn’t use some encouragement, so here it is! This is a two-part project, and the first part is simple: We are going to create a gallery of encouragement!

You can use this gallery to encourage a close friend or someone you just happened to pass by on the street. You can encourage a relative who may be ill or the girl who handed you your coffee this morning. You could even use this place to encourage yourself!

I dig the premise and it'll be fun to see the different executions as the project unfolds. I'll definitely be sending in my entry...

An Unsettling Nipple

I was reading dooce. today, which is awesome if you haven't noticed. And I thought this was so very heart-warming and funny and, yes, a little gross. But anyway it's a must read....

From a Craigslist posting...

Okay, so about three months ago my roommate takes in this stray dog. She's horrible, and I'm a dog lover, so I don't say that lightly. I say that as heavily as possible. And please don't flag this post for removal, because there is a real dog whose life is at stake here, and although you may disagree with my not writing flowery Ad-Man prose about her, hell, I'm just being honest. This dog sucks.

... I have to say that the first thing you notice about Mama Dog is: nipples. Obscenely large nipples. We think she was probably used for breeding or something because there's really no other explanation. I'm not being cruel, I'm just saying. Because there's one nipple in particular that is really disturbing. The rest you could maybe overlook. But she has this one nipple that hangs really low, and it's fat, but then it gets really skinny, and then it gets fat again. It's like it's just barely hanging on, though it's not, and evidently there's nothing 'wrong' with it except how it looks. But man, that nipple is unsettling.

Kim Jong-il You Trickster, You!

The BBC has a report on an image released Wednesday of Kim Jong-il that looks to have been photoshopped to show him in good health while inspecting some military units. I present to you here Exhibit A, courtesy of the BBC. This image raises even more questions as to what's going on in North Korea?? Is this him in this picture, is he really dying, or is he off somewhere maybe on an extended vacation Fidel Castro and bin Laden? Who knows, maybe it's not Photoshop. Maybe Kim is some crazy super hero villain who has the ability to warp shadows to his liking!

Beautiful

Visionaire on Sale!

Oh joy! Next Tuesday at Sotherby's photographs sale in London a full set of Visionaire will be up for grabs. Yep, all 53 issues of the exclusive numbered limited edition publication. Many, might I add, are in original packing and unopened. :::gasp:::
Oh to be able to buy such a lovely item! I'm saving up for it. Logic be damned! So far I've raised $3.60 which means at most I'm only about $30,996.40 shy of owning this collection! By next tuesday it's totally happening, right?

Seriously?

Yesterday I was more than ready for the election to be over and I admit I was feeling a bit apathetic about the whole thing. But today I am so completely angry about the world around me that I couldn't care more about it all. Yesterday evening there was a huge mass assembled protesting Yes on Prop 8. Seriously? How can anyone still have that kind of hate in them toward a group of people? How can you honestly still believe that a group of people, any group of people, should be discriminated against in 2008? I heard comments today about how Prop 8 is "protecting marriage". That's just such crap. What about protecting civil rights? Isn't that a concern to anyone? I also got some comments directed at me about how annoying it is when the Hispanic kids come trick or treating at your door and how they get dropped off by the bus fulls. Wow. The narrow minded hateful things that are still spoken and believed by these people is unbelievable and such a complete culture shock for me. Would it be acceptable if I, a Hispanic woman, said to them that it bothered me when white children came trick or treating in my neighborhood? Another comment I heard was that if Obama were to get elected we're screwed. Seriously? Seriously?! I am in such complete shock and I just needed to vent about these awful things to people who understand these very real concerns.

Is it over yet??

The cable's out. Actually, to be honest, it was never in really. I digress, anywho, this has kept me somewhat safe from the nonstop election watch of 08. But nonetheless I'd like it to be Tuesday now. That would be great. Six more days seems like an eternity. I want to know now, it seems like this election has dragged on for so long and it's such an important one as it will help determine whether or not I should flee the country in terror. I'm the person who gets totally engulfed in the life of the fictional person in a book I'm reading and cheats and reads the last couple pages to know how it turns out before continuing reading where I left off. Oh Tuesday...you are so far...

Made me laugh

This was so great I had to post it here. My friend Jaime sent me this video and it is awesome. Customize your own here.

Yes We Carve.

Haha yay! Barack O'Lanterns!~ How awesome is that? See more here, spotted them over at Not Martha.

Its Just So Good.

I'm well into the book now. Blessed Unrest is life changing; it alters your view of the world, it's inhabitants it's possibilities. Pardon the "new agey" music played during this video clip. Anyone else reading about this movement, or as I call it the new revolution?

Voter Suppression

Having the right to vote is one of the very basic and most wonderful things about this country. I think everyone can agree on that, or at least I thought everyone could agree on that. That is until I stumbled upon this video from the organization ACORN. The video is part of a campaign by ACORN to set the record straight about the organization and it's intentions. Over the last 18 months, ACORN has waged a voter registration campaign, which successfully helped register 1.3 million new voters. But the McCain campaign has recently launched an attack on ACORN's efforts saying that the voters who were registered are fraudulent aims at skewing the race in Obama's favor. Why you ask? In preparation for the possibility of their loss. Should the GOP lose this election they can always put the blame on the "fraudulent voters" registered by ACORN. That attack is ridiculous. It truly is. As explained in this video it nearly impossible to get those kinds of results. Watch and learn.

Extreme Pumpkins

I love Halloween. I don't care what anyone says, I think it's fun damn it. Yes, it's childish, and cheesy, and mildly spooky but I enjoy it in all it's silliness. I won't be dressing up this year, costumes are expensive and my 3rd floor apartment doesn't strike me as the type of building that would encourage trick or treating. So there's no point in me dressing up only to sit around the apartment with no Halloween plans right? But I did find these fun and oh so creative pumpkins which I whought were pretty awesome. They are all from Extreme Pumpkins, a great place to look for Halloween fun.

The Daily Scrapbook

Yesterday I discovered The Daily Scrapbook, a weblog by Jessica Helfand. It's really very interesting. Every day she features a new and unique scrapbook. Some are modern some are absolute antiques! Today's feature for example is from 1922, beautiful stuff.

Louise Bourgeois

Another great exhibition is coming to town! Louise Bourgeois will be exhibiting at MOCA from October 26th through January 25th, 2009. This exhibition is the first major showing of Bourgeois’s work in more than a decade. Her work is simultaneously engaging in both modern and traditional techniques and explores various themes in a range of styles. This one is a must-see I think. Ooh! And members of MOCA get invited to a special opening gala this Saturday night, I'll definitely be there.

Vanity Fair Portraits

Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913–2008 will be showing at LACMA starting October 26th through March 1, 2009. This is the first major exhibition to bring together the magazine's archive of rare vintage prints with its contemporary photographs. These look gorgeous! I am so excited to see these, I love a good exhibition and this one looks promising.

Obama: Funny too!

Very funny and charming "roast" at the Al Smith Dinner. Obama: "It's possible I'm a little too awesome." Watch both! They're sooo good! More here.

Friday Freebie!!

Woohoo! What a weird week this has been. So glad it's Friday let the fun weekend festivities begin! I've been on a recipe finding mission lately which inevitably lead to a need for cute recipe cards. Coincidentally, I came across these over at Creature Comforts, I dig the bright colors.

What I'm Reading

I just wandered over to the always charming Via Lido Bookstore where the ever so helpful Dan recommended Blessed Unrest to me. It looks awesome. This book is the kind of read that will get you thinking outside of yourself in your day to day life; to really take others into consideration and how what you do can affect the world as a whole. The cover arts pretty spiffy too.

Do you wonder?

I have wondered, like I'm sure many of you have, what awaits us if "the unthinkable happens" and one day we've got a President Palin. Answers are provided here.

Bacon Today

Bacon Today is an awesome site that features daily updates on the world of sweet, sweet bacon. What could possibly be better? You can even purchase your own bacon n eggs costumes, just in time for Halloween!

You win again, Monday.

It's not just me right? This is a particularly crappy Monday, yes? The Santa Anas are blowing strong. Which makes for dust and allergens of all kinds flying into and up your nose and eyes. Which also leads to dry skin and sniffles. Plus your hairs a mess. And to top it off it's also wildfire season as today has reminded us. Yes, the awful, the depressing, the uncontrollable for days: the wildfire. Egh. Ugh. Poop.

Friday, October 10, 2008

Tonight, tonight...

My supercool sister is taking me out on a a date. Where you ask? To see Julieta Venegas at the Nokia Theatre! I am oh so excited, wouldn't you be? She's so awesome. This is one of my favorite songs by her its from the film Amores Perros.

I'd rather be...

Yes, I live in sunny southern California. But that doesn't mean I don't occasionally yearn for some weather; maybe some rain or a legitimate winter. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the fact that we have lovely weather nearly year round and I am aware that I shouldn't be ungrateful for this. But sometimes I just want it to be cold enough to lay in bed with blankets and a nice hot cup of tea reading. Today is offering just that kind of weather, but alas: the day job. And I just know that Saturday will probably be sunny again and my cold day of tea and reading will be gone again. I thought of this while reading an article over at Slow Like Honey.

A Lego Likeness?? Hm...

Neiman Marcus has made it possible to get a Lego sculpture made in your likeness for the low low price of $60,000! That is providing that you do in fact own the rights to your likeness (whaaa...??) The figures are made by brick artist Nathan Sawaya and are featured as one of this year's outlandish gifts in NM's Christmas Book. Stocks are plummeting, 401Ks are dipping, and unemployment is high. Why not treat yourself to a Lego figurine of yourself?

Little People

So inventive and wonderful and whimsical but they also make some interesting commentary on our world, don't you think? I present to you my new favorite thing, the Little People Blog. Little People is a street art project by artist Slinkachu. And it's awesome.

Nuance by Sublevel

Spotted this lovely piece over at Graphic Exchange. It's so beautiful, it's intended for a young company for web based solutions. Designed by the Dutch firm Sublevel. Nice stuff.

I Love This Oh So Much

I dig Stefan G. Bucher, yes it's true. Not that I've ever met the guy but he just seems like a good guy. His Daily Monsters are so fun and so inspired and just spur of the moment creative. I admire the guy and I am not alone. Stefan recently gave an interview on Abduzeedo which is quite good. Have a look see and you too will dig Stefan G. Bucher.

How to Overcome Resentment

Really, who doesn't this handy little article? Courtesy of Think Simple Now.

Oh Monday.

Watching the news as I got ready for work this morning. It's interesting to me that one story was about how the stock market was down 400 points which was quickly followed by a segment at a high school football field. Without skipping a beat. Really? Is no one concerned anymore? Have we moved on to worrying about football games and fall fashion? Is our attention span really that short? Oh Monday...monday monday...only monday.
